We worked all week installing one sheet after another, cutting holes for electric outlets and windows. Slowly but surely, we found a home for all 11 sheets of pegboard and 9 sheets of hardboard along the interior walls of the Route 104 Science airstream. William came out and helped install some pegboards and replace the weather seal on two windows. Jonathan got a chance to work with a new tool, the oscillating multi-tool, to trim up the edges of pegboard along the windows. Our next steps are to finish installing outlets, install the interior lights, and paint the outside and inside.

The Route 104 Science airstream is starting to look more like a space station as we worked to finish installing the insulation in both end caps. Our next step was to install the interior walls. We decided to go with peg board for the main side walls for its flexibility, cost, and functionality. We envision making great use of the peg holes to change what and how we hang tools, signs, or other materials on the side walls. For example, if we are using screwdrivers, and hammers for a program or event, we can use specialty hooks to hold these in an accessible place while we use different hooks on a different part of the wall to hold signs with important information about safety or about the science behind different types of fasteners. We used clecos (small "place holders" for rivets) to hold the peg boards in place until we knew they were completely against the interior ribs and that the peg boards were ready to be installed in their final position. We clamped some hardboard in place to compare how it could be used as interior walls. At this juncture, we are looking at the hardboard for the endcaps and the peg board for the main side walls. I hope it is as exciting for you as it is for us to see the Route 104 Science airstream's final form taking shape. Our goal is to finish installing the interior walls by early next week. Our next post should also include a sneak peak of the exterior accent paint color!
It's the end of the week and we finished installing the foamboard insulation along both of the main walls. We still have the center of the roof and the two curved endcaps but we will definitely start installing walls this next week! Thank you again to all those who have supported us on this Airstream renovation with their encouraging words, time, and financial gifts. If you would like to join our group of supporters, sign up for our newsletter and consider purchased some of our custom Route 104 Science t-shirts ($18).
We are installing foam boards to insulate the Airstream for heat and sound. We found a DIY'r who recommended installing a 1" foam board and then a 0.5" foam board to boost the "r" value of the overall insulation--this affects how well the insulation prevents heat transfer into or out from the Airstream. I'm looking forward to the next post when the interior walls start to go up.
If you've lived in the Brazos Valley for at least one spring, you've probably picked up on the fact that the Brazos Valley is geologically shaped like a bowl. As the local plants wake up from their wintery slumber, they fill our bowl with their fine yellow flakes. The Route 104 Science Airstream was no exception. It looked like a giant twinkie and while I don't necessarily want to be compared to the cream filling while I'm working in it, it was time to clean it up. Fortunately, I have children that love using the pressure washer and foam cannon. While it could still use a little refresh on the polish, I'm glad to see it shining again.
What a fantastic celebration of God's Love for us on the week of Valentine's Day. We were able to share God's amazing love with four hands on activities to over 180 children and their families across six different locations! Transforming a handful of Starburst candies into a model of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock took time and patience. We are so thankful for all of the moms that helped put names on labels to keep track of the rock cycle lollipops. It was great to have Tristan--one of Nicole's first students when she started teaching at the CHC join us again to provide science demonstrations. Thank you to the families that support Living Hope Bryan's Hope Kids program, the families that fill the Community Homeschool Center, the Classical Conversations communities that meet at Westminster Presbyterian and First Baptist Church in College Station, the R&R Homeschool Group, and the ___ Homeschool Group. Without your excitement, energy, and support, LOVE Rocks! wouldn't have been the joy and success that it was.
If you were in the BCS area this weekend, you were treated to your very own snow flurry Saturday afternoon. We were loading up the Airstream and taking it out to our first Love Rocks! event at Living Hope Bryan. We had a great time and who doesn't love a good story! You might recognize some fun new shirts in the picture. If you participated in the t-shirt campaign last month, we've got your t-shirts. If you missed your chance, we do have extras in almost every size if you want to support a great cause. Thank you again to the families at Living Hope Bryan who allowed us to celebrate God's love with fun science activities and bible lessons.
Two big milestones for Route 104 Science today! We've polished the top half of the Airstream and we set our logo decal in place. Even though she's still a work in progress, we are planning on taking her out as a mascot of sorts for our Love Rocks activities this coming week! Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged us so far.
Squeezed in 5 more hours of prayer over our upcoming events and the people we hope to partner with as we continue to move forward with Route 104 Science. I also kept my hands busy scraping, polishing and patching leaks on the Airstream between our local area rainstorms.
So my junior partner came out to help me finish some patches on the top of the roof and to test our polishing set up and compounds. We figured out some challenges and overcame them before the rest of the team came out to work the next day. It takes a lot of patience and teamwork to make the Airstream shine. Scraping off the old clear coat and then three rounds of polishing compound. We're excited to see how the whole Airstream will look once its polished up. One of the reasons we have shifted to working on the outside is because we are hoping to take Route 104 Science out on a fundraising road trip the week of Valentine's Day as we offer no-cost activities that help us remember our place as the object of Jesus' great love.
