Craft  Your Story To-Go Bags and a Light on a Hill

Each week this summer, the Clara B. Mounce Library in Downtown Bryan and the Larry J. Ringer Library in College Station are offering Craft Your Story bags to their youngest patrons.  Our children were surprised to find that each bag came with a template and more than enough materials to a foldable paper house and a simple electrical circuit inside.

Have you ever wondered about electricity? Electricity is an invisible flow of charged particles that are capable of some pretty amazing things.  The word electricity may draw your mind to wonder about the complex circuits and electrical systems powering the device you are using right now. You might think about the amazing power of lightning bolts darting across a stormy sky. You might even think about the relief of a small child turning on a light switch to scare away the unknown in a darkened room.

In each of these examples, charged particles move from a power source along a path that gives light to the light bulb, the phone screen, or computer display. This complete path is essential for the flow of electricity to make a noticeable difference in whether a circuit works or not.   As my children learned in making their foldable paper house circuit, even the smallest break in the circuit's path will lead to confusion, disappointment, and frustration.

Isaiah 59:1-2 says, "Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.  I believe this truth points to a break in the path between a Holy God and a separated people. We believe this separation is the result of clamoring after our own ways of thinking and doing, something the bible calls sin. There is a solution.

Hebrews 7:25 says, "Jesus is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them."  Jesus intercedes, or closes the gap between God and man for those who put their trust and faith in Him. The next time you build an electrical circuit or turn on a light in a room, think about how important a complete path is and remember Jesus who intercedes on our behalf.

Tune in later this week for some first steps of faith you can introduce your family to as part of the next Craft Your Story bag ... a build-your-own kaleidoscope.
